Modern development increasingly continues to depend on data driven systems. While not necessarily a critique against modern cartography, the technocratic system we live in does further removes us from relying on our instinctual navigational senses. Which prompts the question: are we prepared to make design decisions without high tech systems?
Treasure
We can think of treasure in the same way there is a difference between a house and a home. One is material and the other holds sentimental value. Highly mathematical systems have emphasized the external properties of the material while distracting us from contemplating on the internal meanings of our built environment. Although the two go hand in hand, to find our upper case Treasure we need to remove the systematic boundaries that steer us away from our purpose.
Finding space
The same order that comes from systems also assert limiting anxieties on our creativity. Subverting the mental prisons of political borders and coordinate systems comes from studying how they are used against our spatial psychic. Our purpose can only center and grow if it exploits the blind spots of the systems weaknesses.
Direction
Often times the journey to our destination isn’t as simple as punching an address in our phones. It takes time understanding how our values align in the broader context of the world. Sometimes that direction is found from social justice movements or hobbies. While it’s altruistic to imagine a Bill Gates college dropout scenario, there are ways to bend the system to your dream’s.
