The production of our future is built upon meticulously analyzing old worlds, their flaws and benefits, and projecting forward new opportunities that can predict future trends. While politicians, economists etc will try to envision that world or predict the futures through numbers and words, designer use illustrations as their dominant medium to bring those worlds to life.
Narrative
To write a story is not an apolitical act. Narratives have many functions but at its core, it position individuals or groups with a web other competing stories. World building is no different. In order to make a compelling argument for the reason of its existence articulating the reason for a world’s existence enables it’s future.
Focus
Setting boundaries for new worlds is difficult, however narrowing its scope is essential to ensure the narrative’s argument is not lost. Possibly an effective way to reign in the narrative, is ask the questions or criticism that opponents of the narrative might say. This helps eliminate investing too much time and energy on frivolous details.
Discipline
Possibly the hardest part of world building is remaining consistent in developing. Rigorously imagining requires a large time investment. Especially as other worlds may come across as tempting to build, remaining committed to one world in position is the only way to give a narrative it’s full right.
